Blog EntryArt Sunday guest hostDec 22, '07 6:08 PM
for everyone

Today I get to guest host Art Sunday. What is art? Peter Griffin posed the question “What’s the difference between art and porn?” The answer – a government grant. My question and this weeks theme is what makes art art? Spencer Tunick did a photo shoot in Buffalo, NY in 2004. He is hailed as a genius for his work and a true artist. I’m not sure I agree. Basically he takes pictures of a bunch of naked people standing around. Is it because the people are regular and not the picture perfect models used in other types of photos? Is it because he is such a pretentious jerk that even though he basically takes pictures of people he refuses to be called a photographer? He refers to his work though his people as installations. Or is there some other reason”?

This is by Tunick.

This is a picture from the Central terminal archives.

Why is one art and one regulated to a shoebox? They are both of large groups of people in the same building yet one has meaning and considered special and the other was left unseen for years.

Through Art Sunday I’ve seen a lot of different types and styles of Art. Usually, even if I don’t like the art I an at least see why it is art. I can see skill or style or the process that went into whatever it is. But why is any of it Art to be held up above something else done by someone else?

My theme for this week is not art that you like but art you do not understand; something that confuses you.   I figure you understand more if you learn about something different once in a while.

I will have this on 360, Multiply, and blogger. I’ll post links here on Multiply. http://360.yahoo.com/mfhy2000

See I agree it's not but many others worship this guy. Look him up on line.

That's "meat", lol, he was in Lisbon too, no I didn't join the crowd anxious to be "immortalised". He should have a different approach to his own work, he's too pretentious, you're right. Great provocative theme, Michael, thanks for hosting,

Hmmm I went to the Art Museum not too long ago and when I looked at some of the art that I felt were like..huh? I can't understand them. My older daughter, however, would explailn to me what they meant. I stll couldn't see it, but I do respect it.

Art is all about interpretation. Perhaps the artist creating it interprets it a specific way, and to him/her it is an obvious way to see it, but if all I see is an ugly blob on canvas, well, that's what it is. I guess sometimes art is in the eye of the beholder, eh?

i would say both are art
both bring me to ponder humanity
both in a different way
and the two together in yet a third
i can't really explain why they touch me
but they do
perhaps my entry explains better
what i can not explain

great theme for art sunday

:)

Hi, Michael,

ART so often is only in the eye of the pocketbook, isn't it? At the Chicago Art Institute my husband kept checking out exactly
WHO bought & then donated much of the Modern Art. Tax write-offs, he opined.

I have one to add to the tourtoday: Louisiana's Own Clementine Hunter. Thanks for hosting during such a busy time!

I just put up an old post of some confusing art that I have always loved. You can add it if you want. It doesn't matter. The link is:

I've seen a lot of articles about this guy and his photos.

I think he is a "son" of the Media power.. nothing else.... He's got good friends and a powerful agent to push him in Art market.

As it came up to my mind I posted "Artist's shit" by Piero Manzoni. Comments?

That would make sense, how else could he get so much attention.

It would have been fun to do but the family didn't seem into it.
