    Dueling Magics

Born into a family with magical powers, Aisling is a young witch who fights to protect her homeland of Kars. Unfortunately, the biggest threat to Kars is her older brother, Kirion, who has chosen to use his powers for evil, and years ago forced Aisling into exile.

Since Aisling’s departure, Kirion has tightened his hold on Shastro, the Duke of Kars. Through Shastro, Kirion’s dark influence works to subjugate the entire realm.

With her younger brother Keelan helping her, Aisling returns, in disguise, to undermine Kirion’s power and defeat the evil duke. But as Aisling gets closer to Shastro, the Duke takes a liking to her, and she finds herself questioning her mission. But when a neighboring clan lays siege to Kars, Aisling and Keelan realize they must act, lest Kirion bring even more death and suffering to Kars’ loyal subjects than he has already caused.

Using all the magic, persistence and ingenuity she can summon, Aisling must somehow find a way to avoid the attention of her dangerous older brother, save the people from his murderous sorcery, and return to their Dukedom the peace and prosperity it once knew.

    From The Critics

    Publishers Weekly
In Andre Norton and Lyn McConchie's The Duke's Ballad, the latest enjoyable entry in Norton's durable Witch World series, Aisling, a young half-breed witch, must rid her country of Karsten of the blight her brother's evil has spread. Teens will particularly appreciate this tale of magic-filled adventure, animal familiars and palace intrigue. Agent, Jack Sternig at the Sternig & Byrne Literary Agency. VOYA - Merideth Jenson-Benjamin
In the latest entry in the Witch World series, Aisling, a young woman with magical gifts, is compelled to return to her homeland of Karsten to destroy her evil older brother Kirion and Shastro, the malevolent duke that he serves. Kirion is without magic but has learned to draw power from the deaths of those with Old Blood, which makes magic possible. Aisling becomes part of Shastro's court in disguise, aided in her mission by her younger brothers Keelan and Hadrann. The three work behind the scenes to bring down the evil sorcerer and the duke. This novel does not work well as a stand-alone title. With the exception of Shastro, none of the characters undergo any change as the story progresses. Kirion is absolutely evil, Aisling is absolutely good, and the two obviously despise each other, but how they got that way is only touched on. As part of a series, these issues might be more fully explained in earlier titles. As the three conspirators work covertly against Kirion and the duke, not a great deal happens, but the descriptions of court intrigue and the elaborate plots set out by Aisling and company are entertaining and believable. For those who are fans of the series, this book is probably a must-have. Those unfamiliar with the series should start with earlier volumes.
