We went to a AAA Bisons game Friday night. The Pawtucket Red Sox were at bat and the runner was called out at first. If you look; the runner is on the bag, the baseman is not and he does not have the ball. We didn't stay for the whole game; it dropped below 50 and the wind off Lake Erfie is cold.
So it was one schooner with a 3 person crew sailing around the Marina and docking. There were some bag pipes and 4 wenches. Overall it wasn't much but it was a nice day to get out and see a boat and some of downtown. Getting ready to dock to boat. I told you there were bag pipes. Then someone said free beer samples. There was not a single ad for this event. Just the little notice in the paper and over 1000 people showed up. When they started serving the beer we walked around the marina and got some other oictures and saw the work on the new museum/display for the Erie Canal. Those pix will be in another blog.
Replica tall ship here will deliver new beer A tall ship carrying mystery beer will weigh anchor Saturday at Erie Basin Marina. The 96-foot Challenge, a replica of an 1800s schooner, is scheduled to tie up at noon to promote the U. S. debut of a “new craft brew.” Bagpipers and drummers will play as deckhands and “wenches” in period dress unload barrels of the product for nationwide distribution. Kara Zale of Eric Mower Associates, representing the unidentified brewer, said Buffalo will get the first taste because of its nickname, City of Good Neighbors. The secret beer has “hospitable roots,” dating to a time when people gave kitchen parties featuring suds and lively music, Sale said.

Pregnant woman, 17, escapes attempt to kill her By Vanessa Thomas NEWS STAFF REPORTER Updated: 04/01/08 6:37 AM adsonar_placementId=1304969;adsonar_pid=808767;adsonar_ps=-1;adsonar_zw=280;adsonar_zh=200;adsonar_jv='ads.adsonar.com'; A pregnant 17-year-old girl escaped flying bullets Sunday on the city’s East Side after the father of her unborn child and his friend reportedly attempted to kill her as a way to advance in a gang, The Buffalo News has learned. The incident happened at about 4 p.m. at Koons Avenue and Genesee Street. The girl was not struck by the shots. Two males are facing attempted-murder charges in the shooting — William Stewart, 17, of Nevada Avenue, who is believed to be the father of the unborn child, and his friend, Terrance J. Martinelli, 20, of Minnesota Avenue. Police believe that Martinelli was the triggerman and that Stewart ordered the execution-style shooting as way to advance in a gang. Sources say Stewart also did not want the girl to give birth to their child, so he plotted with his friend to kill her. Erie County District Attorney Frank J. Clark declined to comment on the motive for the shooting but said the two are not facing any charges connected to the fetus. “The law states that in order for the fetus to be considered a person, it had to be beyond 24 weeks, so the charges are only with regard to the [girl] — not the unborn fetus,” Clark explained Monday. This incident marks the second case in less than a week that a pregnant woman came under attack in the city. Wednesday, a Hickory Street woman was beaten by a man who told her that he was going to “make her lose that baby.” He also informed her that “her getting pregnant was the worst thing that could happen to him.” The man repeatedly punched the woman in the head, face and body, causing her to suffer cuts, swelling and bruising to her ear, face and throat. The condition of her unborn child was not released. “Sadly, pregnant women are vulnerable,” Clark said of the two recent cases. “The fact of her being pregnant is often a factor in why she’s attacked. Sometimes it isn’t, but often it is.” Stewart and Martinelli were being held Monday in the Erie County Holding Center without bail. They are scheduled to appear at 2 p.m. Friday for a felony hearing. Ferry-Fillmore District police officers allege that Stewart and Martinelli plotted together to kill the girl. She was walking Sunday afternoon when Martinelli approached her and asked her to borrow her cell phone. Police said Martinelli fired several shots at her with a silver .45-caliber handgun. All the shots missed, and she was able to run away. Sources said the two initially planned to stab the girl but then decided to shoot her instead. The sources also said they shot at her as a way to advance in a gang. Officers Kristin Langdon and Peter Kocol arrested Stewart at about 12:15 a.m. Monday, while Martinelli was arrested at about 10:45 p.m. Sunday. vthomas@buffnews.com

Bernier plays right wing and was a 2003 first round pick by the Sharks. He has 13 goals and 10 assist this season, he will be a restricted free agent at the end of the year. Campbell will become an unrestricted free agent this off-season and recently rejected a three year offer from the Sabres for less than $6-million per season. After the trade, Campbell told reporters he found the length of the Sabres' offer unacceptable. He says he wanted to stay in Buffalo, but says it's time to move on. This the elementary school I graduated 8th grade from. I was at Corpus Christi from K to 6th. That was 1982 when Christi's closed. The first closing of Buffalo's Catholic schools. EAST SIDE St. Stanislaus School to be closed — a victim of declining enrollment Updated: 02/09/08 7:07 AM St. Stanislaus School on Wilson Street on Buffalo’s East Side will close in June, Bishop Edward U. Kmiec announced Friday evening. The school, which has pupils in kindergarten through eighth grade, has seen enrollment drop to 75 pupils, only 11 of them members of the parish. The school had a peak enrollment of 1,400 in 1888. St. Stanislaus School opened in 1881 and has been staffed by the Felician Sisters for its entire 127- year history. Parents and faculty were told of the closing at meetings on Friday. For several years the school has had a marketing effort to increase enrollment, but it was not enough to save it and the recommendation to close was made by Bishop Edward M. Grosz, pastor of St. Stanislaus Parish. St. Stanislaus School has been operating with a significant budget deficit, supported by a $250,000 annual parish subsidy. The school has nine full-time teachers and two part-timers plus a principal, vice principal/teacher and administrative assistant. They will be considered for vacancies at other diocesan schools, officials said. The diocese said it will work with parents to help students transfer to other nearby diocesan schools. Grosz said negotiations are under way about how the building will be used. “I am confident that we will soon be able to make an announcement regarding the future operation of the building,” he said. “We are looking at an option that will benefit the local community and will be a positive addition to the neighborhood development that is already under way.” McHugh Construction has purchased vacant land near the church in the Broadway-Fillmore area and is developing St. Stanislaus Gardens. Initially, 30 affordable homes will be constructed, with long-term plans calling for as many as 200 homes. Carol Kostyniak, secretary for Catholic education in the diocese, said a task force will be created to study the educational, religious and social services needs of the central city. In addition to diocesan officials, it will include representatives from D’Youville College, the BISON Fund, Catholic Charities, and the Foundation of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Buffalo and the Diocese of Buffalo. “This is a wonderful opportunity to understand the diverse needs of this community and to move forward in a positive and collaborative effort to provide the necessary services,” she said. citydesk@buffnews.com

January 17th, 2008 at 11:50 am by Mike Miller From the Buffalo News… Graffiti vandalism leads to jail By Matt Gryta Buffalo News NEWS STAFF REPORTER 01/15/08 Buffalo graffiti vandal Christopher Fargo was sentenced Monday to up to nine months in jail on his latest graffiti-related arrest, which violated the probation he was granted two years ago. State Supreme Court Justice Penny M. Wolfgang warned Fargo, 24, of Linwood Terrace, that he faces “much longer” time behind bars if he gets in trouble again. Fargo was arrested in the Central Terminal on Nov. 11 while allegedly with a group of other graffiti suspects. He has been in jail since his Dec. 13 arraignment. One of the first vandals seized in a multi- agency crackdown on graffiti throughout the city two years ago, Fargo spent 35 days in jail then before pleading guilty to felony criminal mischief for defacing the Ferguson Electric Construction building. He was placed on five years’ probation by Wolfgang on July 17, 2006, prohibited from carrying paint cans or shoe polish and ordered to pay Ferguson $360 in restitution. Assistant Erie County District Attorney Thomas D. Kubiniec, the county’s chief graffiti vandalism prosecutor, said the jobless Fargo pleaded guilty Monday to the probation violation count of failing to lead a law-abiding life and that he still owes the $360 in restitution. Fargo apologized “to the court, the city and everyone I have harmed.” He said the court-ordered substance-abuse and mental counseling he has been receiving since his Dec. 13 arraignment has helped him accept responsibility for his actions. But the judge sternly told him that after having given him “a break” two years ago, her fear now is that he “will try to do the same thing again and destroy the property of other people.” Should that happen, she guaranteed he will be sent to state prison instead of the Erie County Correctional Facility, where he will serve out his latest jail term. Eugene P. Adams, Fargo’s court-assigned attorney, told the judge Fargo remains “despondent” over his latest graffiti- related arrest. Adams said he has found since representing Fargo that, while graffiti vandals are generally perceived to be hell-bent on just destroying the property of others, there seems to be something of an emotional “impulse” on their part to find a way of “being recognized by society.”
January 10th, 2008 at 6:18 pm by Sara Etten Buffalo Central Terminal gets a mention in a great article about Buffalo in the Toronto Star. “A few blocks away is the East Side’s most dramatic artifact: Buffalo Central Terminal, an art-deco masterpiece that opened in 1929 and closed in 1979. The massive brick complex includes a main concourse with a vaulted ceiling and architecture so grand it rivals New York’s Grand Central Terminal (and has been used as its double in films such as The Natural). Over the years, Central Terminal was abandoned and left to rot. Now owned by a non-profit corporation, it is slowly being restored. There are tours and special events, including art exhibits and festivals such as Dyngus Day, an Easter Monday carnival-type Polish bacchanal.” Read the entire article here: http://www.thestar.com/Travel/article/292052
